What is happening at the Delaware beaches over Labor Day weekend?
Sussex County has the busiest weekend in the state. Bethany Beach is celebrating its 125th anniversary with Founders' Day, September 4 through 7 — including its postponed Independence Day parade Sunday at noon and the 41st Jazz Funeral on Labor Day Monday. Rehoboth has free bandstand concerts Friday and Saturday and the Piping Out Parade Monday evening. Gary Clark Jr. plays Freeman Arts Pavilion Saturday. Two separate end-of-summer processions happen within thirty minutes of each other on Monday.

Every coastal town has a way of admitting summer is over. Most of them just take down the umbrellas.
Delaware buries it. On Monday evening in Bethany, a Dixieland band leads a coffin down the boardwalk. Half an hour later and twenty miles north, a crowd in Rehoboth picks up kazoos and pipes the season out. Nowhere else on the East Coast says goodbye to August quite like this, and both processions are free, and both have been going on longer than most of the people watching them.
This year the coast is louder than usual, because Bethany Beach turns 125 and has stacked its entire celebration into the same four days.
Everything below is for Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7, 2026. Practical information — parking, dogs, lifeguards, traffic — is at the bottom, and it's the part most guides leave out.
Bethany Beach: Founders' Day and the 125th
Bethany has the biggest weekend on the coast.
Friday, September 4 — Love Seed Mama Jump at the Bethany Beach Bandstand, free. A regional institution.
Saturday, September 5 — The Jimmies, '80s flashback, at the Bandstand. Free.
Sunday, September 6 — the postponed Independence Day Parade at noon, themed Stars, Stripes & Shorelines. A July parade in September, which is either a scheduling accident or the most Bethany thing imaginable. Jesse Garron's Elvis tribute follows at the Bandstand that evening.
Bandstand start times need checking. Summer shows run 7:30 p.m. and fall shows 6:30 p.m., and which category this weekend falls into wasn't clear from the town's published materials. Confirm the day of.
Bethany Beach Farmers' Market holds its final market of the season Sunday, September 6, 8 a.m. to noon, at Garfield Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue. It's the market's 20th anniversary season.
Monday: two ways to say goodbye to summer
This is the best thing about Labor Day in Sussex, and the two events are close enough together in time that you'll have to choose.
41st Annual Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral — Monday, September 7, 5:30 p.m., on the Bethany Beach Boardwalk. Free. A New Orleans-style mock funeral procession that buries Summer, complete with Dixieland bands and a coffin.
There's a change this year, and it's a tender one. Paul Jankovic, the volunteer who ran the Jazz Funeral for decades, died earlier in 2026. The Town of Bethany Beach has taken the event over, with Events Coordinator Julie Malewski leading it. The tone is shifting somewhat — less mourning, more celebration of the quieter season ahead — the coffin stays in modified form, a tribute to Jankovic is planned, and Mayor Ron Calef will speak.
Piping Out Parade — Monday, September 7, 6 to 7 p.m., on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Free. Gather in front of the Henlopen Hotel at the north end and process to the Bandstand. Bring an instrument, or take one of the kazoos they hand out. It's a Rehoboth Beach Historical Society revival of a tradition that goes back to the 1950s and bandleader Sammy Ferro.
Thirty minutes and twenty miles apart. You cannot do both, and locals will argue with real feeling about which one you should choose.
Rehoboth Beach
Friday, September 4 - West Side Creative Market, 37401 Malloy Street — local artists, live music, food trucks, craft cocktails - Captain Mike & the Shipwrecked at the Bandstand, 8 to 9:15 p.m. Free.
Saturday, September 5 - Last Blast Prediction 5K, 7:30 a.m. from Grove Park. $30 early, $35 through September 4, $40 race day. No watches, no phones, no headphones — awards go to the twenty runners closest to their predicted time. - CAMP Rehoboth SUNFESTIVAL: Love Out Loud, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Convention Center, with David Archuleta headlining. Ticketed, and it sells out annually. Sunday night is the dance, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. - Pet Sounds Live, a Beach Boys tribute, at the Bandstand, 8 to 9:15 p.m. Free — and the final Bandstand concert of the 2026 season. - Zelky's Summer Send-Off at Zelky's Beach Arcade, running Saturday through Monday.
Sunday, September 6 - Beach church service on the sand, 8:30 a.m. - Delaware State University Marching Band Labor Day Celebration, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bandstand. Free, and an HBCU marching band on the boardwalk is a genuinely good hour.
Selbyville: Freeman Arts Pavilion
Friday, September 4 — Changes In Latitudes, a Jimmy Buffett tribute. Possibly the most on-theme Labor Day booking in the state.
Saturday, September 5 — Gary Clark Jr., the marquee concert of the weekend anywhere in Sussex. Note this is a phone-free show using Yondr pouches.
Both ticketed, at 31806 Lakeview Drive. Children 12 and under are free in lawn and terrace sections for some shows — check when booking.
Lewes
Lewes does none of this. Lewes has a farmers market, a Loyalist on a lawn, and a lightship — and on a weekend when the rest of the coast is shouting, that restraint is the whole appeal.
Historic Lewes Farmers Market — Saturday, September 5, 8 a.m. to noon, George H.P. Smith Park. Note the Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock ended September 2.
First Friday Community Night — Friday, September 4, 4 to 7 p.m. at Sussex Tavern on the Historic Lewes Town Campus.
Loyalist on the Lawn — Saturday, September 5, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Zwaanendael Museum. Free. A costumed historian portraying an officer of the Loyal American Regiment, part of the America 250 programming.
Fort Miles Historical Area in Cape Henlopen State Park is open through the weekend, and the Lightship Overfalls at Canalfront Park is a good hour if you've had enough sand.
Milton
The Milton Theatre, 110 Union Street, is the strongest indoor option on the coast this weekend — four tribute shows in four days:

Nassau Valley Vineyards runs its Sunday farmers market, noon to 3 p.m., at 32165 Winery Way in Lewes — 20-plus vendors, live music and a sangria bar.
Dewey Beach
Nobody needs a blog post to explain Dewey. If you're searching for Dewey specifically, you already know exactly what you're looking for.
The town's own summer programming has finished — Monday movies on the beach ended August 24, Wednesday bonfires ended August 20. What's left is the bar scene: the Starboard, Rusty Rudder, Bottle & Cork, Northbeach and the Lighthouse. Live music lineups for the weekend weren't published far enough ahead to list reliably, so check each venue directly.
Daily beach yoga runs at 8 a.m. at Dickinson Street.
The practical part
Everything above is the fun part. This is the part that decides whether you go home relaxed or go home with a parking ticket.
Parking meters are enforced all weekend. The 2026 metered season runs through September 15, so the holiday is fully inside it. Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, South Bethany and Fenwick are all $4.00 per hour. Lewes is $2 downtown and $3 at the beach.
Dewey's free Monday evening parking does not apply on federal holidays. You will pay on Labor Day Monday. It's the easiest ticket in the county to get.
Rehoboth bans overnight parking — midnight to 6 a.m. — on Queen Street, Prospect Street and East Lake Drive through September 15.
State park entry at Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore and Fenwick Island is $10 for a Delaware-registered vehicle, $20 out-of-state. Lots fill. Cape Henlopen has closed to incoming traffic on peak holiday days. Arrive before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Fenwick Island's lot is smallest and fills first. Walking or biking in is free.
Surf fishing drive-on reservations are required 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays — including Labor Day Monday — at Gordons Pond, Herring Point, Navy Crossing, Point Crossing and 3R's. Book through ReserveAmerica or 1-800-499-8221.
Dogs. Rehoboth changed its rules in January 2026: dogs are banned from the beach and Boardwalk all Labor Day weekend, and the restriction lifts Wednesday, September 16. Older guides still say September 30 — they're out of date. Bethany's ban runs through September 30. Dewey is the dog-friendly option, with a town license, before 9:30 a.m. or after 5:30 p.m. State park swimming beaches bar pets through September 30.
Lifeguards. Monday, September 7 is the last day of full coverage. Rehoboth Beach Patrol works through September 20, but the city warns that as guards return to school the covered area shrinks to Pennsylvania Avenue south to Hickman Street — signs mark the unguarded stretches. Bethany goes to weekends only after Monday. State park guarded beaches run through Labor Day; a September extension wasn't confirmed.
Bonfire permits. Dewey is $50 online, $30 in person for property owners, and the town explicitly warns to book early for Labor Day — at this point you're probably too late. Fenwick is $100 plus a $100 refundable deposit, residents and renters only.
Traffic. The pattern is dependable: southbound SR-1 jams Friday afternoon into evening, again Saturday mid-morning, and northbound backs up badly Monday from late morning through evening. Five Points west of Lewes and the Rehoboth Avenue approach are the chokepoints, and the Indian River Inlet Bridge is the pinch between the north and south beaches with no alternate crossing. US 113, SR 24 and SR 26 are longer but calmer.
Closures Monday: Sussex County offices, town halls, libraries, DMV, courts, banks, post offices. Most retail and grocery stay open.
