What is there to do in New Castle County over Labor Day weekend?
The anchor events are the Arden Fair on Saturday, the Wilmington Blue Rocks' final home games Saturday and Sunday, and the Delaware AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade on Monday morning. Add a free Labor Day concert at White Clay Creek State Park, the last day of the season at Fort Delaware, and Hagley open all three days. Most of the county's big fall festivals — Brandywine Festival of the Arts, Newark Community Day, Delaware City Day — fall after this weekend, not during it.

Here is the honest version, which you will not find in the roundups: New Castle County is quiet this weekend. The county's marquee festivals — Brandywine, Newark Community Day, Delaware City Day — all cluster in mid and late September, and most "Labor Day in Delaware" articles paper over that by listing them anyway.
What this weekend actually has is better than a long list. It has a village fair older than most of the houses around it, a ballpark on the river closing out its season, and a ferry to an island fortress on its last day of summer. Three good things beat fifteen padded ones.

Saturday's headliner: the Arden Fair
If you do one thing this weekend, do this one.
The Arden Fair runs Saturday, September 5 at the Arden Club, 2126 The Highway, in the village of Arden between Claymont and North Wilmington. Admission is free. Music runs from roughly 9:50 a.m. to 6 p.m. across multiple stages, alongside 100-plus craft vendors, antiques, used books, a food court, and children's games.
Arden itself is half the reason to go. It's a Georgist single-tax community founded in 1900 — an actual utopian experiment that never stopped experimenting — laid out along wooded lanes with no straight streets and houses that look hand-made because they were. The fair has run for well over a century. It is one of the oldest continuously held community events in Delaware, and it feels like nowhere else in the state.
Parking: free, with a continuous shuttle from the YMCA Hanby Outdoor Center on Chestnut Road, between Marsh and Darley. Take the shuttle. The village lanes are narrow.
Baseball on the Riverfront
The Wilmington Blue Rocks close out their home season against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Frawley Stadium, 801 Shipyard Drive on the Wilmington Riverfront:

Sunday is the final home game of the 2026 season — the last professional baseball played in Delaware until spring.
The pairing writes itself: the Arden Fair Saturday morning through late afternoon, then down to the Riverfront for a 6:05 first pitch. Craft vendors and a village band in the morning, a ballgame under the lights at night, and you never leave the county.
Labor Day Monday
Monday has less on it than Saturday, but it isn't empty.
Delaware AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade & Rally — 10 a.m. to noon. This is the county's only actual Labor Day parade. The 2026 venue hadn't been published when this was written; in 2025 it was held at Rodney Square in Wilmington. Free. Confirm the location before you go.
Kategory 5 Band, free Labor Day concert — 3 p.m. at the Carpenter Recreation Area, White Clay Creek State Park, Newark. Classic rock covers, bring a blanket. Free with park admission, which is $5 for a Delaware-registered vehicle and $10 out-of-state. This is the traditional season-closing concert and the best free thing happening Monday.
Fort Delaware's last day of the season — Monday, September 7 is the final day of summer operation at Fort Delaware State Park on Pea Patch Island. The ferry leaves from 45 Clinton Street, Delaware City; ticket office is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission including the ferry is $15 adults, $14 seniors and military, $8 children 2–12. After Monday it drops to weekends only through late September. Booking ahead is wise on a holiday.
Hagley Museum — open all three days, 200 Hagley Creek Road, Wilmington. Cannon firings at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. daily. Saturday adds fishing on the Brandywine, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., no license required, plus history tours at 11 and 1.
Delaware Children's Museum — open Labor Day Monday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 601 S. Madison Street on the Riverfront. $15 per person, free under 12 months. Teachers and military with valid ID get in free that weekend.
Out in the parks
Mason-Dixon Hiking Series — Saturday, September 5, 10 to 11:30 a.m., meeting at the Possum Hill parking area in White Clay Creek State Park. A hike to the Post Mark'd West tri-state marker and the first outing in a new joint Delaware–Pennsylvania–Maryland series. Free program, park entry applies.
Cooch's Bridge Historic Site Open House — Saturday, September 5, noon to 3 p.m., on Old Baltimore Pike in Newark. This is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Delaware, on September 3, 1777 — which makes the timing neat in the America 250 year. Registration encouraged.
Rockford Tower — Sunday, September 6, 1 to 3 p.m. Climb the 1899 water tower in Rockford Park for the view across the city and the valley. Free.
Place Names Walk — Sunday, September 6, 10 a.m. to noon in Brandywine Park. A free guided walk on where local place names came from.
Bear Trail Half Marathon & 10K — Sunday, September 6 at Lums Pond State Park, 1068 Howell School Road, Bear. Mostly flat trail, billed as beginner-friendly. Start time and entry fee weren't published when this was written; register through RunSignUp.
Historic New Castle
The New Castle Court House Museum at 211 Delaware Street is open Labor Day, free, with donations welcome. Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The Historic New Castle Farmers Market runs Saturday, September 5, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Green.
Old New Castle needs no event to justify the drive. Cobblestone streets, a green that runs down to the river, and a courthouse where Delaware voted itself out of the British Empire — on a September afternoon with the crowds gone south to the beach, it's the best quiet hour in the county.
If it rains
Delaware Museum of Nature & Science, 4840 Kennett Pike — open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., $15.50 for ages 3 and up. Note it closes September 8 through 11 for maintenance week, so this weekend is your window. Labor Day Monday hours weren't confirmed; call ahead.
Delaware Art Museum — the DelArt Film Society screens Rio Bravo (1959) on Saturday.
Winterthur, 5105 Kennett Pike — open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Their normal week doesn't include Monday and no holiday opening was confirmed, so check before making the drive.
Movies — Penn Cinema Riverfront and Cinemark Christiana are the obvious options. Showtimes for the holiday weekend aren't locked in this far out, so check the theater directly.

Also worth knowing: Wilmington's outdoor pools closed August 16, and the New Castle city summer concert series has finished for the year.
Practical notes
Closures Monday, September 7: city and county offices, DMV, courts, libraries, banks, post offices, UPS and FedEx. Target, Walmart, Trader Joe's and most grocery stores stay open.
Wilmington trash: no collection Monday. East of I-95 shifts to Tuesday, west of I-95 to Wednesday.
State park fees run March through November: $5 per Delaware-registered vehicle, $10 out-of-state. Lums Pond, Bellevue, Brandywine Creek and White Clay Creek all get busy on the holiday — go early.
Driving: Delaware's Office of Highway Safety began its Drive Sober enforcement campaign on August 14 ahead of the holiday. Expect stepped-up patrols statewide.
