What is there to do in Kent County over Labor Day weekend?
Saturday is the day. The Victorian Garden Party at Woodburn — the Governor's Mansion in Dover — is free, runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is the county's standout event. Add the Downtown Dover Farmers Market, the 70's Rock Parade at the Smyrna Opera House Saturday night, and Killens Pond Water Park's final weekend of the season, which runs right through Labor Day Monday. Friday and Sunday are thinner, and this guide says so rather than padding.

Kent County has no signature Labor Day festival, and pretending otherwise would waste your Saturday.
What it has instead is one genuinely lovely morning. The Governor opens his garden, a brass band plays, someone rides an 1880s high-wheel bicycle across the lawn, and you drink tea on the grounds of the Governor's Mansion for free. That is not a consolation prize. That is a better hour than most festivals deliver.
Around it: a water park closing out its season, a rock tribute band in a restored opera house, and harness racing on Monday afternoon. Plan it and the weekend works. Wing it and you'll spend it in the car to the beach.
Everything below is for Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7, 2026, with source links so you can confirm before you go.
One note on Dover. An EF-1 tornado tracked through the city on August 20, and cleanup was still underway as of late August. No Labor Day events had been cancelled at the time of writing, but several take place on The Green and Legislative Mall, close to the damage corridor along Division and Loockerman Streets. Call ahead. The City of Dover's main line is 302-736-7005.
Saturday: the Victorian Garden Party
Woodburn, the Governor's House, 151 Kings Highway SW, Dover. Saturday, September 5, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free.
The Governor and First Lady open the gardens of the Governor's Mansion for a Victorian afternoon: the Fort Delaware Cornet Band on the lawn, the Wheelmen riding and displaying high-wheel bicycles from the 1880s, complimentary tea and pastries, and tours through a house that has been standing since before the Revolution. Period dress is encouraged and entirely optional — some people go all in, most don't, nobody minds.
It costs nothing. It is the most distinctly Dover thing happening all weekend. If you build your Saturday around one event, build it around this one.
The rest of Saturday in Dover
Downtown Dover Farmers Market — 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on The Green. Produce, prepared food, local makers, live entertainment. Worth a call first given the storm cleanup; there's also a source conflict on whether the 2026 market runs Saturdays or Sundays, so confirm the day.
First Saturday Family Creative Studio — Biggs Museum of American Art, 406 Federal Street, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free drop-in art studio for families, with projects tied to the museum's collection. The Biggs is also showing Reflections: 25 Objects for 250 Years of Delaware History through January.
Love Day Community Unity Day & Resource Fair — Legislative Mall, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A community fair from the V Love Foundation with vendors, bounce houses, a dunk tank, face painting, free haircuts, wellness screenings and food trucks. The 2026 date appeared on an aggregator rather than the foundation's own site, so verify at 302-608-4917 before making the trip.
A reasonable Saturday: farmers market on The Green, walk the First State Heritage Park, over to Woodburn for the Garden Party, dinner downtown, then north to Smyrna for the evening.
Saturday night: Smyrna Opera House
70's Rock Parade — Saturday, September 5, 7:30 p.m., at the Smyrna Opera House, 7 W. South Street. Tickets around $25 general admission, $35 VIP, $39 balcony, through eTix. A Long Island-based tribute act working through Rod Stewart and the Faces, Grand Funk, Bowie, T. Rex and Boz Scaggs.
The Opera House gallery is also showing the Citizen Photographer Exhibition from September 3 through October 2 — a Delaware Art Museum statewide project, free to view. Easy to pair with the concert.
Dinner beforehand at Brick Works Brewing and Eats in Smyrna makes the evening work without a lot of driving.
Killens Pond Water Park — closing weekend
5025 Killens Pond Road, Felton. Saturday, Sunday AND Labor Day Monday.
This is the county's best Monday option and the last swim of the year — the sort of closing-day afternoon kids remember longer than the ones in July. Two sessions daily — 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m., with the facility cleared between. Holiday and weekend rates are $12 for anyone 48 inches and over, $10 under 48 inches, free under age one. All-day visitors need tickets for both sessions.
The park opened a new, larger pool in May 2026, and this weekend closes out the season.
Also at Killens Pond: a guided Family Paddle on Sunday, September 6, 6:30 to 8 p.m. — adult-and-child tandem kayaks, $35 per boat, registration required.
State park entry is separate: $5 per Delaware-registered vehicle, $10 out-of-state.
Milford and the south of the county
Downtown Milford First Friday — Friday, September 4, 5 to 8 p.m. on Walnut Street. Shops open late, live music, food trucks. Free.
Riverwalk Farmers Market — Saturday, September 5, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1 S. Walnut Street. Delaware's longest-running farmers market.
Tidal Farmers Market, Frederica — Sunday, September 6, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1456 Frederica Road.
Monday at the races
Harrington Raceway & Casino — live harness racing Monday, September 7, post time 4:30 p.m., at 15 W. Rider Road. Free admission. September racing runs Monday through Wednesday only, so Monday is the single race day in the whole holiday weekend. Worth a confirming call to 302-398-7223.
Music and casino
Glass Onion plays the Círculo Lounge at Bally's Dover Casino Resort, 1131 N. DuPont Highway, on Saturday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. Rock, R&B and dance covers. Lounge shows are typically no cover, 21 and over on the casino floor.
If you're thinking of Dover Motor Speedway — nothing this weekend. Zach Bryan plays there September 18 and 19.
College sports
Delaware State University hosts a volleyball tournament weekend at Memorial Hall in Dover: Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. against NJIT, then Saturday, September 5 at 10 a.m. against Quinnipiac and 6:30 p.m. against Lehigh. Women's soccer hosts Hampton on Thursday, September 3 at 5 p.m.
DSU football is away at William & Mary Saturday. The home opener is September 12 against Bowie State.
If it rains
Air Mobility Command Museum, 1301 Heritage Road at Dover AFB — free admission, free parking, open Wednesday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Labor Day Monday. Their Open Cockpit Day is September 19, not this weekend.
Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village, 866 N. DuPont Highway — Wednesday through Saturday 10 to 4, Sunday 1 to 4. Assume closed Monday.
Biggs Museum of American Art — Saturday programming confirmed above.
Old State House and John Dickinson Plantation — both generally 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Good history-forward alternatives to the beach traffic.
Kent County Public Library, 497 S. Red Haven Lane, Dover — a Rise and Fall: The World Trade Center program begins Friday, September 4. Library programs are free; call 302-744-1919 for the time.
Movies — Milford Movies 9 on North DuPont Boulevard is the closest independent theater. Showtimes for the holiday weekend aren't set this far ahead; check directly.
Free and simple
Sometimes the best version of a long weekend is a park, a cooler, and nowhere to be. Kent County is good at that:
Brecknock County Park, Camden — about 86 acres of trails and open space
Big Oak County Park, near Smyrna
First State Heritage Park, Dover — a fee-free urban park across The Green and the historic district
Killens Pond State Park trails, separate from the water park
What's not this weekend
Riverwalk Freedom Festival, Milford — Saturday, September 19
Smyrna Depot Days — September 26
Harrington Heritage Day — already happened, August 22
Wyoming Peach Festival — an August event, despite what some listings still show
Fifer's Fall Fest and corn maze, Camden-Wyoming — opens September 19
Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash — not until 2027
The following weekend, September 11 through 13, is considerably busier than this one: a fall craft show at the Ag Museum, MoonDance at the Smyrna Opera House, the DSU home opener, and a Gothic Market at the Fairgrounds. If you're flexible, that's the better weekend.
Practical notes
Closures Monday, September 7: libraries, DMV, courts, banks, post offices, county and municipal offices, the Air Mobility Command Museum. Most grocery stores and big-box retail stay open.
Dover trash: the city typically shifts collection a day after a Monday holiday but hadn't posted its notice when this was written. Yard waste limits are lifted for storm debris cleanup.
Schutte Park and the Dover Little League fields were badly damaged in the August 20 tornado — assume unusable.
State park fees: $5 Delaware-registered vehicle, $10 out-of-state, March through November. Water park admission is separate.
